What Are the Best Arthritis Treatments?

arthritis hands
If you suffer from arthritis, life is not easy. For most the pain is so bad they must take prescription drugs. Here is a natural arthritis treatment from a medical doctor, that promises to cure or relieve your arthritis in 6 weeks.

Up to now, arthritis sufferers had to take NSAIDs – short for Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. We know them by names such as Aspirin, Ibuprofin, Advil, naproxen, diclofenac, Motrin, Celebrex, Vioxx, and Daypro. An astounding fact about NSAIDS, however, is that one of the side effects is death. Other side effects are liver and kidney damage.

The Statistics on Arthritis Treatments

In 1998 the AMA (Amer. Journal of Medicine) said that 16,500 deaths occurred each year among those taking NSAIDS. The FDA says that was a conservative figure, with real deaths over 20,000 a year. That was 14 years ago. Most people have no warning signs that these drugs are causing internal damage before they end up in the hospital in serious condition. Source: http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/12824/rheumatology/arthritis_and_pain_relief_medications_cause_16500_deaths_per_year.html

By 2011 the Amer. Heart Assoc. was saying that the “use of NSAIDS was associated with a 45% increased risk of death in the first seven days and a 55% increased risk up to three months.” Source: http://www.theheart.org/article/1223565.do – from May 2011 – Journal Circulation

We now know there is a double to triple heart attack risk with Celebrex, and Vioxx having caused over 139,000 strokes and heart attacks and 55,000 deaths before it was removed from the market in 2004. In fact, death from drugs is the 4th leading cause of death in the US each year. Source: http://www.cancure.org/medical_errors.htm

When we realize that most of the prescribed arthritis treatment medications are only modestly effective, and are very dangerous, perhaps it’s time to look at alternatives.

There are 2 Kinds of Arthritis – Which do you have?

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, also known as “wear and tear” arthritis. It usually affects the fingers, knees, and hip joints. It does not involve inflammation.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is characterized by red, hot, swollen joints.

What Alternative Arthritis Treatments Are Out There?

In this 7 minute video Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, MD – Medical Director of the National Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers and Chronicity, lays out a 4-Step Process for treating arthritis more naturally with minimal prescription medications. This 6 week protocol is described in detail below the video, along with a few additions that were added later by Dr. Teitelbaum.

Dr. Teitelbaum’s 6 Week Arthritis Treatment Protocol

The first 3 steps below are the basic protocol for osteoarthritis
If you have a stubborn and persistent case, he recommends you include Step 4.
A treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is also included.

This program can be used alongside your prescribed medications. He suggests that when you feel well enough, you could tell your doctor that you now feel so much better, that you are ready to taper off your medications. There is no obligation to explain the natural measures you have been using to heal yourself.

Step 1 – Repairing Your Joints

Continue the routine you choose below for 3 months minimum. You are giving a spa treatment to your joints to heal them.

1. Feed your joints with a good multivitamin – Arthritis pain comes from tight muscles around the joint and the magnesium and B vitamins in the multivitamin relax those muscles.
Here are the best multivitamins I can find:
Garden of Life Vitamin Code 50 & Wiser Women’s Multi – 240 – VegCap
Garden of Life Vitamin Code 50 and Wiser Men’s Multivitamin Supplement, 240 Count
Garden of Life Vitamin Code Perfect Family Multi 120 Caps

2. Take Glucosamine Sulphate (not chloride) 750 mg 2-3 times a day.
Mega Glucosamine 750 mg 120 Caps

3. Take MSM Methylsulfonylmethane – 1500-2500 mg a day for 2-5 months – provides the protein building blocks needed for joint healing. MSM 500 mg 100 Caps

Note: If you combine Glucosamine with MSM you’ll get a synergistic effect which speeds up the healing.

4. For severe arthritis include Chondroitin Sulfate begin with 1200 mg twice a day.
Source Naturals Chondroitin Sulfate 600mg, 120 Tablets

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are what the joints are made of, and therefore, what they need to heal. So they work very well. The key supplement is Glucosamine. You must have that one.

So take a multivitamin + Glucosamine. Include MSM for a stronger effect. Add Chondroitin for severe arthritis.
Find one that combines all three in each tablet.
Swanson has Glucosamine, Chondroitin, & MSM 500/400/200 mg 240 Tabs
It has 500 mg of Glucosamine, 400 mg of MSM, and 200 mg of Chondroitin in each tablet.

Step 2 – Treating the Inflammation

For Osteoarthritis – with achy joints but not achy muscles, there are several products available.

Choose one of the 3 products below which use these natural anti-inflammatories: Cherry, Willow Bark and Boswellia
– Boswellia decreased arthritis pain by 90% in one study.
– Tart cherry in addition to being an anti-inflammatory is very high in antioxidants.

1. Healthy Knees and Joints – 60 Softgels>
Suggested Use: Take 3 capsules daily. For best results, take 1 capsule with each meal, for 6 weeks.
– According to Dr. Teitelbaum, in a double blind study with Celebrex, this product “beat the pants off Celebrix”.
See this news report.

2. Fatigued to Fantastic! End Pain
– a herbal mix of willow bark, boswallia and cherry – similar to the one described above.
Suggested Use: Take 2 tablets three times a day for 6 weeks – then go off it. Or you can continue for 3 months to seal in the benefits, and then lower the dose or stop it and take as needed.

3. Integrative Therapeutics End Fatigue Pain Formula
Suggested Use: Take 2 tablets 3x day for 6 weeks, then you can often lower the dose. It takes 6 weeks to see the full effect.

Home Remedy: Make your own Ginger Tea
Buy ginger root in the grocery store. Cut it in strips & let it dry because dry ginger works differently than fresh ginger. Then chop it up in tiny bits and pour hot water on it, and you’ll have a ginger tea. Sweeten with stevia/honey. This is very effective as an anti inflammatory.

Note: Dr. Teitelbaum says: Arthritis Pain is like a fire. Once you put out the fire, it should stay out unless it is caused by an allergy (see Step 4 below). Ordinarily, once you turn off the pain with medication or Glucosamine/MSM/Chondroitin, studies show, that after 3 months, the pain tends to stay gone without it.

Step 3 – Restoration of Function

Next, move to physiotherapy measures. If you have a decreased range of motion, and you don’t use it, the rule of the body is “Use it or Lose it”. So you will lose it as it tightens up.

1. Take a hot compress, hot water bottle, heating pad – lay over the affected joint for about 5 minutes.
You can use the other hand to straighten out those joints and get your range of motion back. With the heat on it, it won’t hurt.
Goal: To get the range of motion back. When you get it working, you can then use it, even without the heat.

2. Exercise and weight loss are 2 other things that will dramatically relieve arthritis pain, and both the risk of getting it and the pain, once you have it. Stretching with yoga, swimming and walking at least 20 minutes a day are good choices.
Note: Don’t push through pain. If it hurts to walk, find a warm water pool and use that to tread water without putting the strain on your joints, until you get their use back.

Diet, exercise and the lifestyle you choose will determine if you will develop osteoarthritis and how it will manifest. For example, overweight people have increased risk of osteoarthritis in hips, knees, ankles and foot joints.

Step 4 – Testing for Food Allergies and Treating Infections

Most people won’t need this step. However, if you have really persistent arthritis that won’t go away with other treatments, look at food allergies – they are likely to be stealth players in the background that are at the root of the problem.

You can also try a simple food elimination diet called NAET – short for Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique. It was developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad.

You don’t have to avoid the food forever. You can get rid of the allergies using this method. With this special acupressure allergy elimination technique you can eliminate one food allergy each day within 20 minutes. You will need to get Dr. Devi S. Nambudripad’s book: “Say Good-Bye to Illness” (543 pages).

A Simple, Safe and Inexpensive Treatment

A Home Remedy that you might try before you do anything else.
Certo – used to make jams and jellies contains pectin, which naturally occurs in plants. Try taking 1-3 tablespoons of it mixed in juice once or twice a day. If it’s going to help you, you’ll know in 7-14 days.

A Special Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Just For Rheumatoid Arthritis where the joints are red and inflamed.
1. Take Vectomega – 1 a day for as long as you need it.
2. Ask your doctor for a prescription for Doxycycline or Minocycline – for 6 months. Dr. Teitelbaum suggests taking 100 mg twice daily.
3. Go on an anti-inflammatory diet low in meat and high in fish oil or Vectomega.

What is Vectomega?

Vectomega is one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. By taking omega-3’s in the Vectomega form of 2 tablets, you are getting the same effect as taking 16 standard fish oil capsules (7200 mg).

That’s because the Omega-3’s in Vectomega are not extracted from the fat of the fish, but from the head of the fish. Europharma, who manufactures Vectomega, uses only salmon heads as their source of omega-3’s. Their research showed that the head of the fish is a superior source, because the omega-3’s are 50 times more absorbable from this source than from fish oil. You’d have to consume 4 grams of fish oil to get the equivalent of omega-3’s you will get by taking only one tablet of Vectomega.

How is this possible?

In the head of the salmon the omega-3’s are not attached to triglycerides, as they are in the fish fat from which most conventional fish oil is extracted. But they are attached to phospholipids, which are much faster carriers than the triglycerides.

This is the first major advancement in Omega-3 science in over 40 years. It’s not a fish oil product, but a whole food Omega-3 complex. They use a cold water extraction method to preserve the stability of the omega-3’s, and the phospholipid carriers increase the absorption of the omega-3’s by the brain.

This form of omega-3 more easily assimilated by those who have gastro-intestinal inflammation, difficulty digesting oils, and other digestive difficulties, so you don’t get those disagreeable “fish burps”.

Here, Cheryl Myers, Head of Scientific Affairs and Education at Europharma explains the difference between fish oil and Vectomega.

The Role of Fish Oil in the Body

You might be wondering why is there so much emphasis on taking fish oil or eating cold water fatty fish? The fact of the matter is, that if you don’t have healthy fat in your diet, very little Vitamin A, E, D or K gets absorbed into your blood. That’s because these particular vitamins are fat-soluble vitamins. They are not water soluble like the B Vitamins and Vitamin C, which mainly need water to transport them. Fish oils carry omega-3’s which play a major role in brain function, and heart health.

If you have been limiting your intake of healthy oils, then these vitamins can’t be broken down. And if they can’t be broken down, then, your brain will be seriously undernourished.

Alzheimer’s patients and even those who are experiencing short-term memory loss, should notice a big improvement in brain function, by increasing intake of Omega-3’s. And who can’t use more brain-power?

Also, Omega-3’s are the first line of defence against inflammation in the body. They reduce inflammation. And since we now know that inflammation is a main symptom of all disease, especially brain function decline, then the more Omega-3’s you take the better protected you are from disease.

Taking Vectomega, it seems to me, is a no-brainer. 🙂

Why Do You Need an Antibiotic to Heal Rheumatoid Arthritis?

It is suspected that Rheumatoid Arthritis comes from an infection which triggers the immune reaction that actually causes Rheumatoid Arthritis in susceptible individuals. And a long-term antibiotic will take care of the infection better than a natural product could. Dr. Teitelbaum recommends asking your doctor to prescribe 100 mg of Minocycline or Doxycyline. This is a prescription you can stay on for 6 months or more if you have to.

Caution: But do not use this route, unless you have a severe case, because antibiotics will disturb your gastro-intestinal flora and you need to be very careful to take a good probiotic after a course in antibiotics.

Note: The 4 Step Arthritis Treatment Protocol suggested on this page is from Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum MD, a board certified internist, and director of The Annapolis Center for Effective CFS/Fibromyalgia Therapies, where he sees CFS/Fibromyalgia/Chronic pain patients from all over the world.
