Coconut Oil – A Real Breakthrough for Treating Alzheimer’s

With 6-8 treatments over 6-8 weeks, researchers found that 50% of amyloid plaques were removed from the brain and memory function was restored, to what would be found in normal mice, in 75% of mice.

Australian researchers have come up with a non-invasive ultrasound technology that clears the brain of neurotoxic amyloid plaques – structures that are responsible for memory loss and a decline in cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients.

Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a build-up of two types of lesions – amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. Amyloid plaques sit between the neurons and cause a sticky type of protein that clumps together and forms plaques.

Focused Therapeutic Ultrasound” is a special type of non-invasive treatment that beams sound waves into the brain tissue. By high speed oscillation these sound waves gently open up the blood-brain barrier, and activate the brain’s microglial cells.

Microglila cells remove waste from the cells and clear out the toxic beta-amyloid clumps that are responsible for the worst symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Coconut oil may hold the key to unlocking the riddle of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia like MS, Parkinson’s, ALS, schizophrenia, autism, bi-polar, as well as diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, heart-related illness and even brain-fog.

Alzheimer’s currently afflicts 5.2 million people in the US and is predicted to explode to 15 million by 2050. It’s the 7th leading cause of death for seniors. But now there is new hope.

Coconut Oil Unlocks the Minds of Alzheimer’s Patients

In 2008, Dr. Mary Newport, a neonatal specialist at Springhill Regional Hospital in Florida, discovered what she believes is a significant contribution to slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s, stabilizing it and possibly reversing it in some cases.

Her discovery was spurred by the desire to find some way to help her husband Steve, who in 2004, began showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s. He was diagnosed with a severe case of Alzheimer’s and was literally in full decline. She was losing him fast.

During her research, she came across some reviews published in remote scientific publications, that pointed towards the potential therapeutic uses of ketones – a high energy fuel that nourishes the brain. The most readily available source of ketones is in the form of coconut oil. She introduced a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil into Steve’s diet and began monitoring him closely. The results were remarkable.

What were the results that were so astounding?
Within a few days of first taking coconut oil, Steve’s personality returned, and he was able to tell her that it felt like a light switch had been turned on, the day he started the coconut oil.

How does Coconut Oil Work to Slow Degeneration?
The key ingredient in coconut oil is Medium Chain Triglycerides or MCT. If the body is given MCT, it will convert the triglycerides to ketones which the brain can use. The brains of Alzheimer’s patients are unable to process its primary fuel, glucose, and when that is cut off, it causes the brain to slowly deteriorate. However, when ketones are introduced, the brain recognizes and accepts them in place of glucose. This gives the brain an alternate source of fuel. Many people are now trying this new dietary approach in order to stem the progress of the disease in their loved ones. If it doesn’t reverse the disease, it will at least stabilize it.

What Kind of Coconut Oil is Best?
Only non-hydrogenated, pure virgin coconut oil has this effect. Plus it has the added benefit of increasing the good HDL cholesterol that the body needs. It also has a natural antibiotic effect that kills bacteria in the body, freeing the immune system to do its job to protect the body from viruses and other invaders.

Coconut oil got a bad name in the 1950’s when the president of Proctor and Gamble called coconut oil an “artery clogging oil”, in order to set the stage to promote his own hydrogenated shortenings and butters, as better alternatives to natural oils like pure coconut oil. This misconception was picked up, spread through the media, and was never retracted after the truth came out.

Caution: Dr. Newport advises that what people really need to be concerned about is eating anything with hydrogenated vegetable oil in it. Get rid of it. Do not wait until you’ve used it up. And read the labels on everything you buy, to avoid buying anything else that is hydrogenated.

The largest producer of coconut oil and coconut products is the Philippines, where it is a food staple in the diet. They cook with it and have some form of coconut in nearly every meal. The Philippines has one of the lowest incidences of cardiovascular disease in the world. They also eat a lot of fish which contains omega-3 fatty acids.

How much coconut oil do you need to take?
Originally, Dr. Newport suggested that to duplicate the dose of MCT taken in the ketone study, about 7 level teaspoons of Pure Virgin Coconut Oil be taken at one time, once a day, which should circulate ketone bodies for about 24 hours.

She later moderated this routine, and spread it out over the course of the day:
2 tablespoons in morning,
2 tablespoons at lunch
2 tablespoons at dinner time
1 before bed.
Always mixed with some food.

Each individual is different, so trying different routines is the only way to find out what is best for you.
Note: Some people may experience diarrhea, for a few days, until the body gets used to the oil.

Coconut oil can be added to oatmeal for breakfast, combined with salad dressings, and put it on anything that one would normally put butter on. It is recommended that you also eat fish twice a week to get enough omega-3 fatty acids. Flax meal and oil, fish oil capsules and walnuts are also good sources.

Daily Dosage of this mixture: Depends on body weight: 155 lbs or less – 1 tbsp 3 x day; 155-190 lbs – 1-2 tbsp 3 x day; over 190 lbs – 2-3 tbsp 3 x day

An Update on Dr. Newport’s Husband – Steve
Steve passed away on January 2, 2016.

Dr. Newport’s statement: “It has been nearly 8 years since Steve improved with coconut oil. He improved very significantly and steadily the first year and remained stable for 2 more years. He began having seizures in summer 2013 starting with a head injury from a fall and did not fully recover. In spite of this serious setback, I feel it was well worth the extra quality time that we had together as a family. He remained in our home with the help of our wonderful caregivers and had minimal further worsening over the next two years. I cannot help but think that ketones played an important role in all of this. Although he lost his battle against Alzheimer’s on January 2, 2016, at age 65, there is now at least hope for others who are at risk or in earlier stages of this horrible disease, and their families, might actually win their fight.
