Living Consciously

Living ConsciouslyI’ve started this blog as a way of becoming more conscious and mindful of my life – to slow myself down, so that I’m going about my daily life with more of a subjective awareness of each moment.

I’ve been trying, off and on for years to get into a habit of meditation. I knew I needed it to slow myself down, but it took two wake-up calls before I was motivated enough to stop the train and get off.

My Journey to Consciousness
On Dec 11th, 2010 as I was preparing something in the kitchen using a hand-held blender, and without thinking of what I was doing, I put my finger near the blade to scoop something out from around it, and I ended up in emergency waiting 5 hours for a Plastic Surgeon to reattach my finger.

Update: A year later – January 2012, my finger is fine, the nail has grown back, it looks normal, I have normal use of it, and normal feeling has been restored to about 85%.

Let me say that really slowed me down — and got me thinking. What am I doing with all this running around like a mad rabbit? I don’t live in the present moment anymore.

Being Hit Over the Head Literally & Figuratively
This isn’t the first time I’ve been hit over the head. September 1st 2009, I was in the underground of a parking garage of a big food chain, and couldn’t get out through the automatic gate, because of a problem with my ticket. I parked the car in an inactive lane going through the gate, and walked over to validate my ticket again.

On the way back, I was looking down, caught up in my own thoughts. I wasn’t watching what was going on around me or I would have seen the steel bar coming down after a car had gone through, before it hit me. It hit me on the left side of my head, breaking my glasses. I was very lucky it didn’t hit my eye or the top of my head. It was just over my eye. I had recurrent pain for over a year to remind me of it. But that didn’t slow me down.

This latest incident happened the day before I was about to launch a new career as a Social Media Manager. Needless to say, I was stopped in my tracks. I have now had more than a month to realize that I cannot continue on the same path I’ve been on.

I believe these incidents were wake-up calls to make me stop and re-examine my life, and to be more aware of what I’m doing.

So where to go from here?
I’ve found a wonderful meditation CD by Esther & Jerry Hicks called Getting Into The Vortex: Guided Meditations CD and User Guide which I’m glad to say, I am actually taking the time to use.

Abraham’s voice is so soothing and so gentle, that I feel like I’m being healed through it. I can’t recommend it enough. For anyone who is trying to slow down and become more consciously aware of life, this is a real helping hand.

So now that I’ve gone through a second operation on Christmas Eve 2010, which is etched in my memory, and five months of weekly physiotherapy, my finger is gradually returning to life. A steel pin was inserted into the top of the finger and down past the first joint, to help the bone knit together. The pin came out 5 weeks later and the nail is now starting to grow again. This is the start of something – a change, a new awareness in my life, which I’m determined to enjoy and cherish every moment of.

Getting to Know the Body Better
As we move through life, we begin to notice health problems. This blog is becoming a way for me to share the information I’ve been gathering about health issues.

While we are distracted with all the day-to-day demands of our busy lives, disease can quickly sneak up on us, and take over. But it doesn’t have to happen this way.

What we don’t usually appreciate is that the appearance of symptoms is NOT the beginning of the problem. In many ways it’s the end! By the time symptoms appear, the body’s balance and defense mechanisms have become exhausted and can no longer cope. Before you know it, you are listening in shock as the doctor is telling you, you have high blood pressure, diabetes, a heart condition, or some form of cancer. And that really forces a major change in your routine.

I’ve decided to become proactive about my health and take control, before these health issues take control of my life. As I come across this information I will share it with you on this blog.

Here’s to your health, and the life you choose to live!
